Natural Climate Feedback Loops May Add Up to 30% More Warming Than Fossil Fuels Alone
New modeling indicates that emissions from thawing tundra, drying wetlands, and intensifying wildfires could amplify human-caused warming by 20 to 30 percent. Even if net-zero emissions are achieved, these natural feedbacks would add roughly 0.2 degrees Celsius, rising to 0.4 degrees if residual emissions persist. The study warns that current climate models omit these feedbacks, likely underestimating future warming and the remaining carbon budget.
The research, appearing in *Environmental Research Letters*, was led by Sam Abernethy of Spark Climate Solutions. It highlights that current climate models guiding international negotiations fail to incorporate these natural system breakdowns, potentially leading to an overestimation of the remaining allowable carbon emissions.
Scientists face significant hurdles in quantifying these emissions due to the complexity of the processes and a lack of observational data from remote regions like Siberia and the Congo Basin. Experts note that without accounting for these natural contributions, projections are fundamentally incomplete, leaving a widening gap in climate predictions.
This study could reshape how policymakers assess climate risk, as ignoring natural feedbacks may lead to insufficient mitigation targets. Communities in coastal and low-lying regions could face accelerated sea-level rise and extreme weather events sooner than anticipated.
