Nighttime Illumination Linked to Structural Heart Changes

A study of over 11,000 adults found that exposure to light during sleep hours is associated with thickening of the left ventricle and reduced heart flexibility. Participants wore light sensors for a week and underwent cardiac MRI three years later. The findings suggest that keeping bedrooms dark may support cardiovascular health.
The investigation tracked over eleven thousand UK Biobank participants, using wrist-worn sensors to gauge nightly brightness. A threshold of three lux distinguished higher exposure groups. Subsequent MRI scans, performed three years later, revealed structural alterations in multiple heart chambers, notably the left ventricle's thickened walls and diminished internal volume.
Accompanying editorial commentary suggests physicians should routinely inquire about sleeping environments, including shift work and evening screen habits. Simple mitigations, such as blackout curtains, warm-toned bedside lamps, and masking electronic standby lights, were proposed as low-cost public health measures to reduce potential cardiac strain.
This research could shift clinical focus toward environmental factors in cardiology. Individuals living in brightly lit urban areas or working night shifts may face previously unrecognized cardiac risks. If replicated, these findings could prompt routine screening of sleep environments, potentially influencing public health recommendations. However, the observational nature means causality remains unproven, so lifestyle changes should be considered alongside established cardiovascular risk management.
