ADHD Linked to Higher Risk of Digestive Issues in Large-Scale Analysis

A meta-analysis of over 1.9 million individuals reveals that people with ADHD have significantly elevated odds of gastrointestinal symptoms. Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and encopresis were notably more common among those with ADHD. The findings suggest a strong gut-brain connection that may warrant clinical attention.
The meta-analysis pooled 23 international studies spanning participants from age 2 to 65, with data drawn from nations including the US, Sweden, Germany, and South Korea. Beyond the headline conditions, the review noted that even indigestion showed a correlation with ADHD, suggesting a broad pattern across the digestive system.
Researchers propose several mechanisms, including ADHD-related impulsivity affecting eating habits, side effects from stimulant medications, and alterations in gut bacteria that communicate with the brain via the vagus nerve. The authors stress this is an association, not proof of causation, and recommend clinicians proactively screen for digestive complaints during ADHD appointments.
This finding could reshape routine clinical care for millions with ADHD, as digestive complaints may currently be overlooked when focus remains on behavioral symptoms. Patients might benefit from earlier referrals to gastroenterologists or dietitians, potentially improving overall quality of life. However, since the link is correlational, clinicians should avoid assuming causality.
