Storage Benchmark Reclassifies Sugon's Record-Setting System Over Transparency Gaps
The IO500 Committee has moved Sugon's ParaStor F9000-based storage submissions from its Production list to the Research list due to insufficient architectural details and limited availability. As a result, Argonne's DAOS system, now led by Intel's Aurora, regains the top Production spot. Despite the reclassification, the Sugon systems remain among the fastest storage subsystems globally.
The IO500 committee's decision stems from strict reproducibility rules requiring public architectural documentation and general file system availability. The Sugon-based SCNet AICS-A system achieved a score of 79,110.05, roughly 2.46 times higher than Argonne's Aurora, while the smaller AICS-B scored 7,839.30, about 2.72 times faster in the 10-client category.
The IO500 benchmark functions as the storage equivalent of the TOP500, evaluating high-performance computing storage via bandwidth and metadata operations. Although the Sugon systems now reside on the Research list, their raw performance remains exceptional, but they cannot hold the Production crown because their architecture is not fully documented and the ParaStor file system lacks broad commercial availability.
This reclassification could affect procurement strategies for high-performance computing centers, as buyers may prioritize systems with transparent, reproducible architectures over opaque, high-performing alternatives. It may also influence vendor investment in open documentation and general availability, shaping future storage designs.
