Chile nursing home blaze kills 16 elderly people
A fire at a private care home in southern Chile killed 16 elderly residents and injured others. The facility had previously been fined for regulatory violations. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire erupted late Friday at a single-story facility in Pitrufquen, roughly 640km south of Santiago, with 26 residents inside at the time. Ten people survived and were transported to a local hospital. Municipal authorities had flagged the home as non-compliant in February, requesting an inspection while sanitary enforcement proceedings were already underway.
Regional health officials noted the facility had accumulated fines and administrative actions dating back to 2019, characterizing it as operating outside proper regulations. Local prosecutor Jorge Granada is examining the scene and interviewing witnesses to determine the fire's origin. President Jose Antonio Kast has ordered a nationwide review of nursing home conditions, with the incident occurring less than a week after a separate fire at a ski hotel in the country.
