Rutgers Football Loses Key Defender Williams for Season, Edwards Departs
Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano announced that defensive back Zilan Williams will miss the entire 2026 season due to a season-ending injury. Additionally, defensive back Canaan Edwards is no longer part of the Rutgers football program.
Williams played in every contest across the previous two seasons, accumulating six tackles, including two on kickoff coverage. He also earned multiple academic distinctions, such as Academic All-Big Ten and a spot on the Hampshire Honor Society.
Edwards participated in just one game last year before leaving. His exit opens up the edge-rushing competition, allowing offseason arrivals Malachi Davis and J'Dan Burnett to vie for snaps as the team transitions into padded practices.
The loss of a veteran defensive back and a young edge rusher could strain Rutgers' defensive rotations, potentially affecting their competitive standing in the Big Ten. This may accelerate the development of younger players who must absorb increased snaps. For the fan base, the timing of these departures, just before the season opener, could dampen early-season expectations and shift focus to the team's overall depth and coaching adaptability.
