Eyelash Extensions Linked to High Rates of Mite Infestation

A study of young women with eyelash extensions found that nearly all had Demodex folliculorum mites, and many showed signs of demodicosis and meibomian gland dysfunction. Researchers recommend regular eyelid hygiene and prompt evaluation for symptoms. The findings highlight potential ocular health risks for frequent extension users.
The study surveyed 345 teenagers and young women, finding that roughly one in four had tried eyelash extensions, and nearly half of those users reported symptoms such as redness, tearing, or itching afterward. Among the 25 extension users examined microscopically, only one showed no trace of D. folliculorum, while 18 exhibited demodicosis and most showed blocked meibomian glands.
Eyelash extensions differ from conventional false lashes by being attached individually with adhesive, and their popularity has driven the global market past $2 billion, with the U.S. representing up to 40 percent of sales. Prior research has also flagged risks, including a study where 60 percent of extension patients developed keratoconjunctivitis and 40 percent reacted to the glue.
This research could influence both medical practice and the beauty industry, as millions of young women regularly use eyelash extensions without awareness of potential ocular risks. Eye care specialists may begin screening extension users for Demodex-related irritation, while cosmetologists could face pressure to provide hygiene guidance or disclose risks. The findings may also encourage product innovation around safer adhesives and cleansing regimens, though broader adoption of such precautions would depend on industry willingness and consumer education efforts.
