Iraqi forces confiscate drone launcher linked to Saudi pipeline attack
Iraqi security forces have located and seized a drone-launching platform believed to have been used in an attack on Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline. The launch site was traced to Maysan province near the Iranian border. Iraq has joined the investigation and is cooperating with Saudi authorities.
The seized platform was traced to the al-Tayeb border district in Maysan province, near the Sheeb crossing and encompassing the Duwayrij River and Tayeb Island. Given the strike distances—roughly 1,100 kilometers from Medina and 800 from Riyadh—the drones were likely long-range, advanced models rather than tactical systems. Iraqi authorities have since closed several border crossings with Iran for inspections, partially reopening them for humanitarian traffic, and reshuffled military commanders in border regions, including Maysan’s operations chief and provincial police chief, who now face investigation.
Baghdad has approved an Iranian request to join the investigation, while maintaining direct communication with Saudi authorities. Iraq’s stated principle of “preventive sovereignty” frames the response as both defending its territory and refusing to serve as a launchpad for proxy conflicts. Saudi Arabia has opted against immediate retaliation, following a request from Baghdad, and is pursuing political containment through the Iraqi government instead of direct escalation.
This incident could heighten regional tensions, as Iraq risks being drawn into a proxy confrontation between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iraqi border communities and security forces may face increased scrutiny or instability, while global oil markets could react to threats against a pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi restraint may ease immediate conflict, but prolonged investigations and militia involvement could undermine Iraqi sovereignty and public trust in its government’s ability to prevent external attacks.
