London Sondheim Revival Canceled After Both Stars Withdraw
The planned 2027 Barbican production of Stephen Sondheim's musical is no longer moving forward, according to producers Empire Street Productions. Ariana Grande exited first, citing a decision to step back from public visibility amid health scrutiny, and Jonathan Bailey followed shortly after. The producers retain rights and are aiming to present the show in 2028.
The production's collapse marks the second time this Sondheim work has failed to reach London audiences. The 2017 Broadway revival starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford was announced for a West End transfer, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted those plans before they materialized. Empire Street Productions has confirmed they retain the rights and intend to stage the musical in 2028, though casting would need to restart entirely.
Grande's exit stemmed from her broader decision to withdraw from public life following her tour, with reports noting her choice surprised some production members. Bailey's subsequent withdrawal cited support for Grande and respect for director Marianna Elliott, with whom he shares a long collaborative history. The musical, which premiered in 1984, fictionalizes painter Georges Seurat's creation of his masterpiece.
This cancellation could ripple through the West End's 2027 season, potentially affecting ticket sales projections and venue scheduling at the Barbican. The involvement of two major film stars had generated significant mainstream interest in a niche theatrical work, and their absence may reduce broader audience crossover.
