Sarah Sherman Samuel's New Collection for Lulu and Georgia Embraces Surrealism
Designer Sarah Sherman Samuel has launched a new collection for Lulu and Georgia featuring surrealist forms like twisted vases, loopy light fixtures, and ruffled mirrors. The line includes a 66-inch chandelier, a tiger rug, and boxy accent chairs, with metallic finishes and hand-illustrated florals. Sherman drew inspiration from her Michigan surroundings, incorporating faux-verdigris metalwork that mimics natural patina.
The collection marks a decade of Sherman's collaboration with Lulu and Georgia, evolving from her initial rug designs into far more experimental territory. Her dual role as both product and interior designer allows her to create pieces that fill specific gaps in her own projects, which is how the oversized chandelier, tiger rug, and boxy chairs originated. Several items from the line have already been integrated into her personal living spaces, including the Calliope chandelier and two rugs.
Sherman's Michigan environment continues to shape her work, with the faux-verdigris finish replicating natural metal oxidation that would otherwise take years to develop. The designer intentionally pairs opposing qualities—soft ruffles against rigid iron, organic forms beside austere metal—to keep pieces feeling light rather than heavy. Hand-illustrated florals and irregular stripes appear throughout, bringing sketchbook imagery into finished, purchasable objects.
This collection could broaden consumer expectations for home furnishings, positioning decorative objects as animated, characterful pieces rather than purely functional items.
