Universal Robots unveils Gen 7 cobot platform with AI-ready hardware at IMTS
Universal Robots introduced its seventh-generation robotics platform at the IMTS trade show, featuring three new robot arms, a redesigned controller, and an AI-ready tool flange. The company says the platform, built around its PolyScope X operating system, offers 40% more compute power in a 30% smaller footprint while simplifying deployment of AI applications in industrial settings. The new arms, named by payload and reach, expand the lineup for larger tasks.
The Gen 7 launch introduces three new arms—UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, and UR18g-950—with names reflecting payload and reach. The redesigned CB7 controller provides 40% more compute power in a 30% smaller footprint, with two versions available at launch. The tool flange supports real-time AI vision and sensing.
The platform is built around PolyScope X and emphasizes network connectivity through a managed switch, allowing IT teams to control data traffic. Universal Robots positions this as enabling physical AI deployment in factories, with the company citing ease of use as a key reason customers return. Teradyne has credited AI for five consecutive quarters of growth.
This platform could lower barriers for manufacturers adopting AI-driven automation, potentially affecting factory workers who may need new skills to work alongside more capable cobots.
