OpenAI snaps up AI camera startup Glass Imaging in $300M deal
OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a Los Altos-based startup founded by former Apple engineers, for more than $300 million. The company applies neural networks to camera hardware to improve image quality at the moment of capture rather than through post-processing. The purchase aligns with OpenAI's reported efforts to develop its own consumer hardware devices.
The over-$300 million price tag marks a tenfold return on the roughly $30 million Glass Imaging raised since its 2019 founding. Founders Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers behind Portrait Mode, built a firm that applies neural networks to camera hardware, improving image quality at capture rather than in post-processing.
This acquisition dovetails with OpenAI's hardware ambitions, including its 2025 purchase of Jony Ive's io startup for $6.5 billion. By integrating Glass Imaging's camera-specific AI, OpenAI could embed superior imaging into rumored future devices like smartphones or earbuds, signaling a push to control the full hardware-software stack.
The acquisition could significantly alter how everyday users capture and trust images, as AI-enhanced capture may blur the line between authentic photos and algorithmically generated ones. Consumers might benefit from higher-quality shots on standard devices, but this also raises concerns about the veracity of visual evidence.
