GAA president insists integration talks continue despite missed deadline
GAA President Jarlath Burns says the plan to merge the GAA, Camogie Association, and Ladies Gaelic Football Association is still active, despite the 2027 target being missed. The resignation of Dr Mary McAleese as chairperson of the integration steering group came just as the original 2027 target was acknowledged as unattainable. GAA director general Tom Ryan has already conceded that the initial timeline was overly ambitious. Burns, however, frames the setback not as a failure but as a necessary recalibration, prioritizing a durable outcome over a rushed one.
Burns points to everyday club activity as evidence that integration is already taking root, with mixed-gender hurling and camogie sessions becoming common. He confirmed that fresh discussions with the Camogie Association and LGFA have already commenced. The stated end goal remains ensuring equal opportunity for all children to participate in Gaelic games, regardless of gender.
The stalled merger could affect the long-term development of female Gaelic games, as separate administrative structures may continue to limit resource allocation and visibility. However, the persistence of integrated club activities may gradually normalize the concept, potentially pressuring leadership to deliver a unified model.
