He stated his immediate focus includes the farm bill and NATO support, noting he continues physical therapy on doctors’ advice.
The 84-year-old has a history of childhood polio and recent falls, including freezing episodes in 2023. His August proxy vote on the farm bill did not count toward advancement, stalling the measure. He is retiring after this Congress, having led Senate Republicans from 2007 until John Thune succeeded him last year.
McConnell’s return could stabilize a sharply divided Senate, allowing key votes on judicial nominees and the farm bill to proceed, which may affect federal courts and agricultural policy.
