Meta's new MCP server lets AI coding agents manage WhatsApp Business onboarding
Meta has introduced a WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server that links AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT to its business messaging platform. The server lets developers delegate setup chores like account creation, phone verification, and Cloud API registration to an AI assistant. It also supports template creation, message testing, and monitoring of compliance details like Terms of Service and payment methods.
The new server joins Meta's existing lineup of MCP servers, which already cover ad management and app configuration monitoring. Other major technology companies, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, and Microsoft, have similarly released MCP servers that let AI agents interact with their services securely.
Beyond onboarding, the AI agent can assist with creating or editing message templates, testing messages and webhooks, and monitoring compliance details such as Terms of Service acceptance, payment methods, and Business Verification status. Meta notes its separate Social Technologies MCP server can supplement the process by helping discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors during setup.
This development could significantly lower the technical barrier for small and medium businesses seeking to use WhatsApp for customer communication. By delegating setup and maintenance tasks to AI agents, companies may reduce the need for specialized developer expertise, potentially accelerating adoption of the platform. However, it also raises questions about accountability — if an AI agent misconfigures compliance settings or payment details, businesses may face operational or regulatory consequences. The trend toward AI-managed infrastructure could shift how organizations approach technical oversight, though the extent of that shift remains uncertain.
