Unofficial tool unlocks higher power draw for RTX 50-series laptop GPUs

A developer has released an experimental utility called NvpwrControl on GitHub that lets owners of certain NVIDIA RTX 50-series laptops raise their GPU power limits by up to 40 watts. The tool reportedly allows the RTX 5090 mobile GPU to draw as much as 225W, exceeding the standard 150W cap plus Dynamic Boost. Users are warned that the software is experimental and could affect hardware reliability or lifespan.
The utility targets a known frustration among laptop gamers: mobile GPUs often share model names with desktop parts while running at far lower power ceilings. In this case, NVIDIA's laptop RTX 50-series chips cap out at 150W, with an additional 25W available through Dynamic Boost when the CPU is idle. The tool reportedly bypasses those limits, letting the RTX 5090 mobile draw up to 225W.
The developer, operating under the name LevinAI, has posted no benchmark results, though early user reports on GitHub and Reddit suggest the tool functions on at least some systems. Because the software is described as experimental and appears largely AI-generated, users assume significant risk to hardware longevity. The author claims successful testing on his own RTX 5070 Ti laptop.
This tool could appeal to enthusiasts who feel their expensive laptops are underperforming, but it may also encourage risky behavior among less experienced users who ignore the experimental label. If widely adopted, it could pressure manufacturers to address power-limit complaints through official channels, or it could simply lead to a wave of prematurely failing GPUs. The broader impact likely remains limited to a niche overclocking community, though it highlights ongoing tension between vendor-imposed limits and consumer demand for maximum performance.
