Zhang Yimou Named Jury President for Busan Film Festival's Competition Section
Chinese director Zhang Yimou will head the jury for the second edition of the Busan International Film Festival's Competition section. The filmmaker has previously won top honors at Berlin, Venice, and Cannes, and directed ceremonies for both the 2008 and 2022 Olympics. His recent projects include "Full River Red" and an upcoming adaptation of "The Three-Body Problem."
Zhang's career spans nearly four decades, beginning with his 1987 debut "Red Sorghum," which earned the Golden Bear in Berlin. His international acclaim includes dual Venice Golden Lions and a Cannes Grand Prix, along with multiple Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. His Olympic ceremony work for both Beijing Games cemented his status as a cultural ambassador.
The filmmaker's relationship with Busan stretches back to 2010, when "Under the Hawthorn Tree" served as the festival's opening film. His current slate includes the 2023 hit "Full River Red" and a forthcoming adaptation of the science-fiction epic "The Three-Body Problem." He joins six other jurors for the Competition section's sophomore edition.
Zhang's appointment could elevate the Competition section's international profile, drawing greater attention from global distributors and critics to Asian cinema.
