Florida Agrees to Draft Fresh Pollution-Reduction Strategies for Nine Springs

A legal settlement between environmental advocates and Florida's environmental agency will require the state to create new cleanup plans for nine freshwater springs, including seven along the Suwannee River and two near Orlando. The plans target nitrogen pollution from farms and septic systems that fuels harmful algal blooms. For the first time, the state must verify whether agricultural best management practices actually reduce pollution in the Suwannee springshed.
The settlement stems from litigation that began after a 2023 appellate court ruling invalidated earlier cleanup plans for several springs. Environmental groups then filed administrative challenges in 2025, arguing the state's revised plans lacked sufficient project lists, monitoring components, and mechanisms to address pollution from population growth. The agreement resolves those disputes without further court delays.
Florida's freshwater springs represent one of the world's largest concentrations of such natural features. Nitrogen pollution from agricultural operations and septic systems drives the harmful algal blooms that have become a prominent environmental concern across the state. The new plans must expand pollution-reduction projects, strengthen water monitoring, and increase enforcement efforts.
