Norway's first fully automated vertical farm produces lettuce untouched by human hands
Norway's first fully automated vegetable facility, operated by Himmelgrønt, grows and packages lettuce without human contact from sowing to store shelf. SINTEF researchers analyzed the potential for further automation in indoor vertical farming, which uses controlled light, temperature, and water to enable year-round production. The facility is located near Oslo for efficient distribution to stores nationwide.
The Gardermoen facility employs a multilevel shelf system where each seed is placed in an individual growing unit, with roots reaching downward into flowing nutrient water while the plant develops above. The fastest-growing lettuce varieties reach harvest readiness in just over two weeks, and the entire cycle—from sowing through cutting and bagging—runs without any human intervention.
SINTEF's research examined current automation levels and projected future technological requirements for indoor farming. Because crops grow without soil and never encounter human contact, disease risks that typically compromise product quality are largely eliminated. The strategic Gardermoen location, near Oslo, supports rapid nationwide distribution to Coop stores, while year-round production reduces dependence on foreign imports.
This development could significantly reshape Norway's fresh produce supply chain by reducing import reliance and cutting food waste, as the tripled shelf life may change how retailers manage inventory. Consumers could benefit from consistently available, longer-lasting salad products, potentially encouraging healthier eating habits. Traditional outdoor farming operations may face new competitive pressure, though the model's broader adoption would depend on energy costs and capital investment.
