Gibson Unveils 60-Piece Limited Edition Guitar Honoring Gustavo Cerati
Gibson Custom has created a limited-edition ES-335 guitar inspired by the late Argentine rock star Gustavo Cerati's original 1965 model. Only 60 instruments will be sold, exclusively through Gibson Garage Miami starting September 18. The guitar features a 60s Cherry finish and other period-accurate details, paying tribute to Cerati's legacy with Soda Stereo and his solo work.
The recreation mirrors Cerati's own 1965 ES-335 TD, which he acquired at Rudy's Music in New York during the mid-1990s. That instrument already carried custom touches—a second pickguard, leather back pad, and Bigsby vibrato—all faithfully reproduced here. Gibson's Murphy Lab aging process gives each new guitar a worn-in appearance matching decades of stage use. The guitar accompanied Cerati through pivotal performances, including Soda Stereo's 1996 MTV Unplugged, the 1997 farewell tour, the 2007 reunion, and his Live Earth set with Shakira that same year.
This marks Gibson's first formal artist instrument honoring Cerati, whose legacy remains potent. Billboard recently ranked Soda Stereo the No. 1 Latin Rock Band of All Time, and the surviving members currently tour with a digital avatar of their late frontman. The 60-piece run, sold exclusively through Gibson Garage Miami, targets serious collectors given its scarcity and price point.
This release could deepen the commercial intersection of Latin music heritage and instrument collecting, potentially drawing younger fans of Soda Stereo into guitar ownership and vintage-style gear. It may also signal to other manufacturers that Latin rock icons hold untapped market value, possibly inspiring similar tributes. For Cerati's devoted fanbase, the guitar offers a tangible connection to his artistry, though its extreme scarcity means most admirers will experience it only through photos and media coverage rather than hands-on access.
