Hidden medieval castle uncovered inside Dublin university structure
A researcher has identified substantial remains of a 13th-century Norman castle inside University College Dublin's Roebuck Castle. The medieval walls and features were hidden under plaster, having been preserved by later renovations. This discovery likely makes Roebuck Castle the oldest standing building on an Irish university campus.
The discovery hinges on careful architectural analysis rather than excavation. Professor O'Keeffe matched surviving wall layouts and structural details against watercolors painted by Gabriel Beranger in 1765, when the castle stood in ruins. Those illustrations preserved small diagnostic features that allowed the researcher to trace the medieval footprint within the later building's fabric.
The castle's history spans centuries of notable use. It served as a residence for a medieval Lord High Chancellor of Ireland, and tradition holds that the deposed James II stayed there in 1689. Its survival is attributed to Georgian and Victorian renovators who chose to build around the old stone walls rather than remove them, leaving the medieval courtyard intact behind the Victorian facade.
This finding could reshape how Irish heritage is catalogued and protected, as it demonstrates that significant medieval structures may survive unrecognized within later buildings. University campuses, heritage bodies, and local historians may need to reassess other sites for similar hidden fabric.
