Tune-Yards Take Boots Riley Film Score on the Road
The Oakland duo will perform music from the film I Love Boosters across North America starting November 5 in Chicago, with stops in Cleveland, Boston, and other cities. Rituals of Mine will open each show. The band described the score as some of their wildest and most far-reaching work, inspired by director Boots Riley's creative vision.
The tour, titled The Ones That Love You, launches in Chicago on November 5 and runs through mid-November, hitting nine cities including Louisville, Grand Rapids, and Portsmouth. Rituals of Mine, a pop duo, will support at every stop. Tune-Yards previously scored Boots Riley’s 2018 film *Sorry to Bother You*; their new score for *I Love Boosters* was released this spring as an album. The band’s sixth studio LP, *Better Dreaming*, arrived in 2025.
The band describes the score as intentionally chaotic, likening it to three different bands scoring the same film. They credit Riley’s direction for pushing them toward their most expansive work yet. The tour venues range from intimate clubs like the Pyramid Scheme to arts centers, reflecting the project’s eclectic, DIY spirit.
This tour could broaden the audience for film scores as standalone concert experiences, especially among indie-music fans who may not typically attend orchestral presentations. By pairing a live score with an opening act, Tune-Yards may help normalize hybrid performances that blur film and concert boundaries. The regional routing—skipping major coastal hubs for smaller cities—could also strengthen local music scenes, offering mid-sized venues a high-profile draw and giving attendees a reason to engage with experimental composition outside traditional cinema settings.
