U.S. agencies investigate cyberattacks on oil tankers in Gulf of Mexico
The FBI and Coast Guard boarded two U.S.-bound oil tankers in the Gulf of Mexico after indications that their networks were compromised. One tanker, the VL Prosperity, reportedly had its navigation and propulsion systems interfered with, and communications were lost for over a day. The U.S. is investigating whether Iran is behind the attacks, which have included other critical infrastructure hacks.
The joint FBI–Coast Guard boarding operation took place over four days in late August, with authorities inspecting both vessels' operational and information technology systems after detecting signs of network intrusion. The VL Prosperity, a 333-meter tanker capable of carrying over two million barrels of oil, was identified as one of the affected ships. According to Iranian media reports cited in the article, the compromise occurred August 7 while the vessel was en route from Egypt to the United States, with hackers allegedly manipulating speed and fuel controls and cutting communications for more than a day.
The investigation comes amid a broader pattern of suspected Iranian cyber activity targeting U.S. critical infrastructure, including medical device manufacturer Stryker, Los Angeles' transit system, and more than one hundred water facilities. Despite the intrusion, officials stated there were no operational disruptions, physical danger to crews, or environmental impacts reported.
