The upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation may require more than 200 GB of storage, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi, who cited the game's expansive scope. It will ship on a single UHD Blu-ray disc, with an additional download of over 100 GB to cover the rest. Including planned DLC, a fully installed version could reach roughly 215 to 220 GB, potentially setting a record for base install size.
The storage estimate stems directly from the game's expansive design, with director Naoki Hamaguchi noting that splitting the title across two UHD Blu-ray discs would force compromises on scope or visual quality. The previous remake entry, Rebirth, already occupied roughly 146 GB, making the jump to 200+ GB a logical escalation. Physical media constraints also play a role, as disc manufacturing requires three months of planning, whereas digital delivery permits patching up to release day.
Two planned character backstory DLCs—covering Vincent and Sephiroth—could push a fully loaded installation toward 215-220 GB, potentially marking the first base install to cross the 200 GB threshold. Unlike Call of Duty Black Ops 6's 300 GB figure, which required every optional pack and language, this would be the standard requirement. PC and PlayStation 5 owners can use conventional NVMe drives for expansion, while Xbox users face pricier proprietary modules capped at 4 TB.
This development could intensify pressure on gamers already navigating elevated storage costs, forcing difficult decisions about which titles remain installed. The trend toward ever-larger installs may accelerate as developers prioritize scope and fidelity over physical media limits, potentially widening the gap between those who can afford ample storage and those who cannot. Console owners with fixed capacities, particularly Xbox users facing proprietary expansion pricing, could feel the most strain.
