ScrollEd, a startup founded by Stanford and UPenn students, converts textbooks and PDFs into a TikTok-like feed with AI-generated videos, audio, and quizzes. The app aims to engage younger students who prefer short-form content, with features for deeper exploration and interactive assessments. ScrollEd’s founders, Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, are a married couple who built the app after feeling drained by nightly doomscrolling. Gupta studies AI and human purpose at Stanford; Neff studies computer science at UPenn. The bootstrapped startup targets schools, corporate training, and individual users, offering a freemium tier alongside a Pro subscription and institutional licenses that provide engagement analytics. At TechCrunch Disrupt, the company will debut its consumer feed, with future plans for adaptive assessments and a lesson library with source-checking workflows.
The app’s design lets users swipe vertically for new topics and horizontally for deeper dives, ending each segment with a quiz. Gupta emphasizes that the platform deliberately avoids maximizing engagement, instead aiming to make curiosity-driven exploration as seamless as moving to the next video. The startup’s long-term vision is a “social network that’s better for you,” blending short-form appeal with educational depth.
ScrollEd could reshape how younger students consume educational material, potentially bridging the gap between short-form media habits and academic rigor.
