Microsoft pulls plug on taskbar companion apps for Microsoft 365
Microsoft will discontinue its Calendar, People, and Files companion apps for Microsoft 365 on December 16, 2026, ending support and functionality. The apps, which were automatically deployed to Windows 11 enterprise devices, will no longer be installed through Microsoft 365 updates. Administrators are urged to remove the apps from managed devices before the cutoff date.
These taskbar tools arrived on Windows 11 enterprise machines through automatic deployment in late 2025, bringing Copilot-powered assistance for finding colleagues, retrieving files, and viewing calendar items. They opened in the background at sign-in by default, though administrators could block installation via device configuration options, and users could disable startup behavior in each app's settings.
As of Friday, Microsoft has halted distribution through its Microsoft 365 update channel. The company expects administrators to uninstall the apps from managed systems before December 16, 2026, while unmanaged device users must handle removal themselves. This accompanies a separate reminder urging organizations to shift Entra ID users toward phishing-resistant sign-in methods before SMS first-factor authentication retires in February 2027.
The retirement could affect enterprise employees who have grown accustomed to the convenience of taskbar-embedded access to contacts, files, and schedules. Organizations may need to update internal guides and re-train staff, potentially causing short-term friction in daily workflows.
