Meta's AI assistant Muse sees faster early adoption than ChatGPT did

Apptopia estimates that Meta's Muse app had 1.8 million downloads on iOS in the U.S. and Canada during its first 12 days, compared to ChatGPT's 1.3 million in the same period. Muse also recorded 359,000 daily active iOS users versus ChatGPT's 231,000 at that stage. Globally, Muse has reached 2.8 million total installs in its first 12 days.
Muse's launch strategy differed from ChatGPT's—it hit both iOS and Android but only in the U.S. and Canada, while ChatGPT debuted globally on iOS alone. To level the field, Apptopia isolated iOS data for the two markets, finding Muse's 1.8 million downloads outpaced ChatGPT's 1.3 million. Globally, Muse has 2.8 million installs in 12 days.
Meta's cross-promotion playbook, honed with Threads (500M+ users), appears active. Apptopia notes over 95% of Muse users are also Facebook users, and 63% use Instagram. Integration with WhatsApp could boost adoption. Meta hasn't disclosed official figures, leaving third-party estimates as the primary metric.
Muse's rapid early adoption could signal a shift in how consumers encounter AI, moving from standalone chatbots to deeply integrated social experiences. This may pressure competitors like OpenAI to accelerate innovation or broaden platform access. For everyday users, integration with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp could normalize AI assistance in routine social interactions, potentially raising privacy and dependency concerns. However, early download numbers don't guarantee sustained engagement, so the long-term societal impact remains uncertain.
