Trinidadian Singer Coutain Gains Momentum With Soulful Soca and R&B Blend
Coutain, a rising artist from Sangre Grande, Trinidad, has become a sought-after name in Caribbean music thanks to hits like "Wedding Band" and "Suga Dumplin." His musical journey began in a church choir at age seven, and he released his first single in 2019 while in university. He is now preparing a new album with producer Michael "Tano" Montano, building on a year of notable success.
Coutain's path to recognition was gradual rather than immediate. Though he sang in church from age seven and came from a musical family, he initially treated music as a hobby while studying at university. His breakthrough came through collaboration, particularly with producer Brooklyn Decent, whom he met during those years, and later with veteran producer Michael "Tano" Montano on tracks like "Junction" and "Jamtown."
His December 2025 single "Wedding Band" marked a creative turning point, reworking Mighty Sparrow's calypso classic "Mr. Walker" into a funk-infused soca track. The song helped secure his opening slot on Kes the Band's summer tour and earned him three Caribbean Music Awards nominations, including best new soca artist, ahead of his planned debut album.
Coutain's rise may signal a broader shift in Caribbean music's global reach, as his blend of soca, R&B, and calypso traditions could attract listeners beyond the diaspora.
