AZ Chike, born Damaria Kayshawn Walker, released his major-label debut 'No Rest for the Wicked' on Sept. 18 via Warner Records. The 14-track project features contributions from Pharrell Williams, Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Hit-Boy, and Tyler, the Creator, and follows his breakout appearance on Kendrick Lamar's "Peekaboo." The rapper says the album reflects both his West Coast party roots and a new level of personal vulnerability.
AZ Chike's path to this release was shaped by both triumph and setback. His breakout came via a guest verse on Kendrick Lamar's "Peekaboo," which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, yet a devastating leak delayed his formal introduction. The album's 14 tracks were sequenced with input from Sounwave and Lamar himself, while Tyler, the Creator contributed beats, verses, and even video concepts for the "Look Like My Mama" visual, which parodied films like Napoleon Dynamite and Men in Black. Chike's mother, a self-described tomboy who loved Lil Wayne's Tha Carter, introduced him to hip-hop, and his first purchased album was Chris Brown's debut, played on a SpongeBob radio. A headlining tour begins Oct. 5 in Houston, with a deluxe edition planned.
