Chicago Street Renamed to Honor Kanye West's Late Mother, Educator Donda West
A street in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood has been renamed Dr. Donda West Way in honor of the late mother of rapper Ye, formerly Kanye West. The ceremony on Tuesday included an unveiling by Ye and remarks from Alderman Greg Mitchell, who praised Donda West's decades of work as a professor and founder of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center at Chicago State University. Donda West, who died in 2007, was also remembered for her influence on her son's music and career.
The honorary renaming took place on East 78th Street in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, where Ye spent his formative years. Alderman Greg Mitchell, who hosted the ceremony, highlighted Donda West’s nearly three-decade tenure at Chicago State University, where she chaired the English Department and established the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. Ye’s longtime associates—including designer Don C, Rhymefest, GLC, and Really Doe—attended the unveiling, though Ye himself did not address the crowd.
Donda West died in November 2007 at age 58, with complications from cosmetic surgery and pre-existing coronary artery disease. Her influence on Ye’s artistry is evident in songs like “Hey Mama” and “Only One,” as well as his 2021 album *Donda*. Ye’s recent *Bully* album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and he continues touring internationally, with upcoming dates in Indonesia and Houston.
This street renaming could reinforce the cultural legacy of Donda West beyond her son’s fame, spotlighting her contributions to Black literature and education in Chicago.
