OpenAI adds voice-activated workflows to ChatGPT mobile app
OpenAI is rolling out voice-controlled agentic capabilities to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting Plus and Pro subscribers use the Work tab to draft documents, compose emails, or summarize Slack messages. The update also brings richer text output in voice conversations and seamless handoff between mobile and desktop. Free and Go users will gain access to plugins and connected apps.
The rollout extends OpenAI's agentic voice capabilities beyond desktop, following July's introduction of the GPT-Live conversational model and its subsequent desktop integration. Mobile users on paid tiers can now initiate document creation, email drafting, and Slack summarization through the Work tab, while also accessing site-building, presentation tools, cloud browsing, and financial features. Free and Go subscribers receive plugin and connected-app access instead.
The update enhances voice conversations with richer text output and enables fluid switching between text and voice input. Users can begin tasks on mobile and continue them on desktop, a cross-device continuity feature. Notably, OpenAI maintains separate chat and workspace interfaces, whereas competitor Anthropic recently merged its Cowork and Chat experiences and simplified mobile-to-desktop handoffs.
This feature could reshape how professionals handle routine tasks, potentially reducing time spent on drafting and summarization while on the move.
