Meta's new VR glasses aim for lightweight IMAX experience

Meta announced its new VR glasses at Connect, claiming they are five times lighter than the Quest 3. The device features micro-OLED displays with 5K resolution and is certified as the first IMAX Enhanced VR device. It will support 3D movies from Disney+ and include Meta AI, with a starting price of $1,299.99.
The new device departs from Meta's earlier bulky headset designs, using a magnesium alloy frame and shifting the primary processing and battery duties to a separate puck that users can carry in a pocket. This architecture allows for a significantly lighter on-face profile, potentially making extended viewing sessions more comfortable than with previous Quest models.
On the entertainment side, the glasses incorporate micro-OLED panels with a high pixel density and support for Dolby Vision and Atmos. The IMAX Enhanced certification suggests a focus on specific aspect ratios, while a partnership with Disney will bring select 3D Marvel films to the platform in November. Interaction is handled through voice commands via the built-in Meta AI assistant or hand gestures.
The premium $1,299.99 price point could initially restrict this to early adopters, but the lighter form factor may finally make prolonged VR use comfortable for mainstream consumers. If the IMAX and 3D Disney+ integrations prove compelling, it could shift home entertainment habits away from traditional large-screen televisions. However, the built-in AI and gesture sensors may also raise new questions about data privacy and ambient surveillance in personal living spaces, affecting how users weigh convenience against security.
