315,000-Year-Old Hominin Face Reconstructed from Moroccan Fossil
Researchers have produced a digital facial reconstruction of the Jebel Irhoud hominin, a fossil from Morocco dated to roughly 315,000 years ago. The team used photogrammetry on a composite skull model and applied soft-tissue thickness data from modern humans of African ancestry. The resulting brain cavity volume estimate aligns with earlier direct measurements.
The composite skull model relies primarily on Irhoud 1 for the braincase and upper face, with the mandible from Irhoud 11 and additional fragments from Irhoud 10, 21, and 22 completing the structure. All specimens came from the same archaeological layer. The team applied photogrammetry to the MPI-EVA model and used constrained anatomical deformation to reshape a modern donor's CT scan.
The estimated brain volume of 1,364 milliliters closely matches the 2018 direct measurement of 1,375 milliliters, and earlier studies placed the range between 1,305 and 1,480 milliliters. The researchers produced two visual outputs: a neutral grayscale rendering emphasizing skeletal anatomy, and a colored artistic version with speculative skin tone, hair, and beard.
This reconstruction may reshape public understanding of early Homo sapiens, suggesting that anatomically modern features emerged across Africa earlier than previously assumed. Educators and museum curators could use such images to present human origins with greater nuance, while researchers may benefit from the open-source methodology as a template for other fragmentary fossils. The speculative artistic elements, however, could risk being mistaken for definitive evidence by casual audiences, underscoring the need for clear communication about what is known versus inferred.
