Mexican national indicted for shooting Dallas school officer with officer's own gun
A Mexican national has been indicted on a federal firearms charge after allegedly shooting a Dallas school police officer with the officer's gun. The incident occurred in August when the officer stopped to help him. Prosecutors say the suspect was in the U.S. illegally.
The indictment stems from an August 6 encounter on the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, where Pantoja-Morales allegedly jumped from a coworker's vehicle into the median. A Dallas ISD officer on routine patrol was flagged down by the coworker and offered the suspect a ride to safety. During the drive, the suspect reportedly began searching the officer's bag, prompting a stop and physical struggle that ended with the officer shot in the femoral artery.
The wounded officer managed to reclaim his weapon, and Pantoja-Morales fled but was quickly captured. A federal grand jury returned the firearms indictment on September 16, and prosecutors have filed a writ of habeas corpus to transfer him to federal custody. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. The ATF and Dallas Police are involved in the ongoing investigation.
