BYD Unveils 44-Ton Electric Truck and Megawatt Charging at IAA
At the IAA Transportation show, BYD introduced the ETT 44, a heavy-duty electric semi-truck with up to 1,000 horsepower and a 372-mile range. The truck uses a 651-kWh LFP battery and can fast-charge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes. BYD is targeting European freight operators facing strict CO2 reduction mandates.
The ETT 44's 651-kWh LFP battery and 1,000-horsepower output position it directly against European legacy manufacturers who face EU mandates requiring 45% fleet emission cuts by 2030 and 90% by 2040. BYD's 10-year, 1.2-million-kilometer battery warranty significantly exceeds the typical two-to-three-year base coverage common across the European truck segment.
BYD's strategy extends beyond the vehicle itself, integrating solar generation, stationary storage, and energy pricing into a proprietary logistics network. The company also announced plans to establish a European factory to produce everything it sells locally, a move that could reshape competitive dynamics in the region's commercial vehicle market.
BYD's entry into Europe's heavy-duty freight sector could accelerate the transition to electric trucking by pressuring established manufacturers on price and technology. Fleet operators may benefit from longer warranties and faster charging, potentially lowering total cost of ownership. However, the impact depends on charging infrastructure development across trans-European corridors, and smaller haulers may face pressure to adopt new technologies or risk competitive disadvantage.
