Fidelity Staples Fund Rises 4.48% in Q2, Boosted by Keurig Dr Pepper

The Fidelity Select Consumer Staples Portfolio returned 4.48% in the second quarter, with its Retail Class shares. A large position in Keurig Dr Pepper, which rose 25%, was the biggest positive contributor, while an underweight in Walmart also helped. An overweight in Bunge Global, down 16%, hurt performance, and the fund added to its Kenvue stake during the period.
The fund's 4.48% quarterly gain outpaced the broader consumer staples sector, which rose just 1.06% against the MSCI U.S. IMI Consumer Staples 25/50 Index during the same period. Keurig Dr Pepper's 25% surge provided the strongest lift, while the fund's reduced exposure to Walmart, which declined 9%, added relative value.
Bunge Global's 16% drop weighed on results due to the fund's overweight position. Managers responded by increasing the Kenvue stake during the quarter, signaling confidence in the consumer health company despite sector headwinds. The fund's performance reflects selective stock picking within a lagging sector.
The fund's results could matter to retail investors and retirement savers who hold consumer staples funds as defensive allocations. Strong performance from beverage and consumer health names may signal shifting consumer preferences toward these categories, while weakness in agricultural commodities like Bunge could reflect broader supply chain or pricing pressures. Individual investors benchmarking against the S&P 500 may question staples exposure given the wide gap, potentially prompting reallocation decisions.
