Special Charter Flight Brings Wish Kids and Families to Disney World
American Airlines, in partnership with Make-A-Wish and Disney, arranged a special charter flight for 14 families from the Philadelphia area whose children have serious illnesses, taking them to Walt Disney World. The sendoff at Philadelphia International Airport featured decorations, face painting, and a visit from the Eagles mascot. The families will spend six days at Give Kids The Village resort during their Disney visit.
The charter flight, staffed entirely by volunteer pilots and flight attendants, marked the second year of the program, which began in 2023 under the name Best Flight Ever. Beyond the airport festivities, the experience extends throughout the stay, with families lodging at Give Kids The World Village, a nonprofit resort designed specifically for wish families, for six days and five nights. Since 1980, Disney and Make-A-Wish have partnered to fulfill more than 175,000 such wishes. American Airlines also encourages AAdvantage members to donate miles through its Let Good Take Flight platform, with all September contributions directed to Make-A-Wish.
This initiative may offer meaningful respite for families navigating the demands of caring for a child with a critical illness, shifting focus from treatment schedules to shared joy and connection. The involvement of corporate partners like American Airlines and Disney could also raise broader awareness of Make-A-Wish's mission, potentially inspiring more donations and volunteer participation.
