2026 Digital States Survey: Nearly Half of States Earn Top Marks, AI Adoption Surges

The 2026 Digital States Survey, conducted biennially by the Center for Digital Government, graded all fifty states on technology-driven improvements in constituent services and operational efficiency. Eleven states received an 'A' grade, while thirteen earned 'A-', placing nearly half in the top tier. Iowa, Nevada, Florida, and Idaho demonstrated the most notable progress since the 2024 assessment. The survey also revealed that 95% of state CIOs face funding constraints, and 78% struggle with enterprise governance. Awards will be presented at the NASCIO annual conference in San Diego on September 27, with the survey underwritten by sixteen corporate technology partners.
This survey could influence how citizens experience government services, as states adopting AI and stronger cybersecurity may deliver faster, more secure digital interactions. However, the rapid integration of AI into state IT systems may raise privacy and accountability concerns among residents.
