Spain's El Mundo reports the CIA warned European allies about potential Russian drone launches from shadow fleet vessels in the Mediterranean. The warning, relayed through Spain's El Mundo and a Lithuanian defense source, points to Russia using civilian shadow fleet ships as launch pads for drone attacks in the Mediterranean. Such strikes would likely aim at Spain, France, or Italy, representing a new phase of hybrid warfare against NATO backers of Ukraine, moving beyond the drone incursions already seen in Eastern Europe.
The Gerbera drone is notably compact—roughly two meters long with a small warhead—yet carries a range of up to 600 kilometers. A similar Gerbera-2 was recently recovered off Poland's coast, though that one likely originated from Kaliningrad. British analyst Keir Giles suggests the goal could be to disrupt airports or ignite industrial fires, rather than cause mass casualties.
This warning could heighten public anxiety across Southern Europe, particularly in coastal cities where shadow fleet activity is suspected. Airports and industrial zones may see increased security, potentially causing delays or economic friction.
