Canada Adds Alcohol Warning to Nigeria Travel Advice After Poisoning Outbreak

Canada has updated its Nigeria travel advisory to warn against unregulated alcohol, citing a methanol poisoning outbreak in Ondo State that has killed at least 48 people. The advisory, revised on September 21, urges travelers to purchase alcohol only from reputable sources and to seek medical care if symptoms develop. It also notes that the overall risk level for Nigeria remains high, with non-essential travel discouraged except in Lagos and Calabar.
The outbreak has been concentrated in Odigbo Local Government Area, with additional cases reported in neighboring Irele. Victims experienced sudden vision loss, severe headaches, breathing difficulties, and rapid deterioration leading to organ failure, consistent with clinical profiles of methanol poisoning. Laboratory testing by Nigeria's food and drug regulatory agency detected high methanol concentrations in locally produced alcoholic and herbal concoctions, with cannabis also identified in some samples.
Canada's advisory places the alcohol warning alongside terrorism, crime, and kidnapping risks, signaling the severity of the health threat. The broader guidance continues to discourage non-essential travel throughout Nigeria, with exceptions for Lagos and Calabar, where a high degree of caution is advised. The Ondo State government had previously issued its own local alert urging residents to avoid unlabelled drinks of unknown origin.
This advisory could influence travel decisions for Canadians and other international visitors weighing trips to Nigeria, particularly those planning to explore beyond Lagos and Calabar. The warning may also heighten awareness among diaspora communities and business travelers about informal alcohol markets, potentially prompting more cautious consumption habits. For Nigeria's tourism and hospitality sectors, such advisories could reinforce perceptions of health risks, though the impact may be limited given the country's already elevated security classification.
