The legacy of Hans J Wegner: from cabinetmaker to master of chair design
Hans J Wegner, a Danish designer, created over 500 chairs in his six-decade career, many of which remain in production. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he combined woodworking skill with an understanding of the human body to refine chair design. His work became central to the Danish modern movement.
Wegner's path to design mastery began early, with a childhood marked by drawing and paper cuttings before he could walk. At just 14, he apprenticed under master cabinetmaker HF Stahlberg, where traditional joinery techniques gave him what he called "a feeling for wood" and produced his first chair at age 15. A 1935 visit to the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition, where he saw architects like Kaare Klint collaborating with craftsmen, redirected his ambitions toward furniture design.
His studies at the School of Arts and Crafts under Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen revealed such exceptional drawing ability that teachers suggested portraiture instead. After exhibiting his first design in 1938, Wegner worked with Arne Jacobsen on Aarhus City Hall furniture and later with Børge Mogensen at FDB Møbler. His breakthrough came when he encountered Chinese Ming dynasty horseshoe-back chairs in Ole Wanscher's book, distilling their continuous curved rail into the 1944 China Chair for Fritz Hansen.
Wegner's enduring relevance may shape how contemporary consumers value craftsmanship over mass production, as his chairs remain in production decades after their creation.
