Pixel Watch 5 finally receives promised health tracking features

Google is rolling out blood pressure and insulin resistance trend features to the Pixel Watch 5 and older models as part of its Health Guardian suite. Users will see the new metrics starting today, with full trend reports expected in early October. The update also extends to Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Fitbit Air, though the latter requires a paid subscription.
The rollout completes the Pixel Watch 5's advertised feature set, which was unfinished at its August launch. Blood pressure estimation relies on pulse and motion data rather than a traditional cuff, while insulin resistance tracking examines multi-week physiological patterns without measuring blood sugar directly. Both features generate trend reports after roughly six weeks of data collection.
Google's decision to extend Health Guardian features to the Pixel Watch 3 and 4 at no cost contrasts with the Fitbit Air, where access requires a paid Google Health Premium subscription. The Breathing Emergency Detection feature remains limited to newer models in select European markets.
The expansion of passive health monitoring to a broader watch lineup could shift how users approach preventive care, making early warning signals more accessible without clinical visits. However, since these metrics are estimates rather than medical measurements, users may develop false confidence or unnecessary concern. The subscription requirement for Fitbit Air could also create a two-tier health tracking experience, potentially widening gaps in access to wellness data across different price points.
