Bungie Reveals Plan to Add Team Deathmatch and PvE Modes to Marathon

Bungie has announced a series of updates for its shooter Marathon, including a team deathmatch mode and new PvE content. The changes are part of a roadmap starting with a Nightfall refresh in October, followed by the Symbiosis update in December. A larger one-year anniversary update in March will tie the modes together and introduce a new onboarding experience.
Marathon launched in March 2026 to a divisive reception, with its extraction-focused gameplay proving a barrier for many players. Bungie's response involves layering familiar modes onto the existing framework rather than removing what's already there. The October Nightfall refresh arrives first, followed by December's Symbiosis update introducing both the game's first permanent PvE mode and team deathmatch. A March anniversary update will then unify these modes and add a new onboarding flow, alongside an expanded Perimeter zone and a Tick Queen encounter. Notably, Bungie is simultaneously recommitting to Destiny 2, including returning vaulted content, signaling a dual-pronged strategy across both franchises.
This roadmap could meaningfully reshape how Marathon is perceived, potentially broadening its audience beyond the extraction-shooter niche that initially defined it. Players who felt alienated by the game's steep learning curve may find the familiar team deathmatch and PvE offerings more approachable, which could help rebuild the player base and community trust. The timing of the anniversary update may also influence whether Marathon sustains momentum into its second year, affecting Bungie's reputation and its ability to support both Marathon and Destiny simultaneously.
