Databricks acquires Seattle spreadsheet startup Row Zero for AI data analysis

Databricks has acquired Row Zero, a Seattle-based startup that makes high-performance spreadsheet software for large datasets. The company will integrate Row Zero into its platform and Genie AI assistant to let non-technical teams analyze data in a familiar grid interface. Terms were not disclosed; Row Zero's standalone product will remain available to existing users.
Row Zero was founded in 2021 by two former Amazon Web Services engineers who previously collaborated on Shoefitr, a shoe-fitting startup Amazon acquired in 2015. The company raised a $10 million Series A round last year, with backing from IA Ventures, Trilogy Equity Partners, Founders' Co-op, and other investors including Wes McKinney of Voltron Data. Databricks, created by Apache Spark's original developers, recently reported a $7 billion annualized revenue run-rate and a $190 billion valuation after a $5 billion Coatue-led round. Most Row Zero employees will continue working from Databricks' Seattle office.
This acquisition could reshape how non-technical workers interact with AI-driven data analysis. By embedding spreadsheet interfaces into Databricks' Genie assistant, finance and operations teams may gain access to powerful cloud-scale analytics without specialized training. However, consolidation in the data tools market could reduce options for startups and enterprises, potentially concentrating influence among a few large platforms.
