Halo Studios Layoffs Disproportionately Affect Senior Staff

Following Xbox's announcement of 268 layoffs, multiple Halo Studios employees have reported being affected, many in senior or lead roles. The studio's former cinematic director noted he was promoted and laid off in the same week. The cuts come as Activision takes over development of the next Halo game.
The layoffs, announced by Xbox executive vice president Matt Booty, removed 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party teams, and management tiers. At least 20 affected Halo Studios employees have publicly identified themselves on LinkedIn, with most holding lead, senior, or director titles. Notable departures include Josh Daniels, who received a promotion and layoff notice in the same week, and Sean Swidersky, a 13-year producer who contributed to multiple franchise entries including The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite.
The cuts coincide with Activision assuming development of the next Halo title, leaving only a small team at Halo Studios to support existing games and community efforts. Layoffs also reached other Xbox studios, including The Coalition and Rare, where a business manager with roughly 19 years at Microsoft was affected. The exact number of Halo Studios staff impacted remains undisclosed.
These cuts could signal a significant loss of institutional knowledge at one of gaming's most storied franchises, as veterans with over a decade of experience depart simultaneously. Players may notice shifts in creative direction under Activision's stewardship, potentially altering the tone and quality of future Halo releases. The pattern of senior-level layoffs across multiple Xbox studios could also affect industry morale, discouraging experienced developers from remaining in long-term roles and reshaping career expectations within the broader gaming workforce.
