Gemini's 'Call for Me' feature lets Pixel 11 users delegate phone calls to AI
Google has begun testing a Gemini feature called 'Call for Me' that lets Pixel 11 users in the US have the AI place and manage phone calls to businesses. The feature dials from the user's own number, can share approved personal details, and provides a live transcript so the user can take over. It is available to paid Gemini subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google beta.
The feature builds on a decade of Google's incremental work in automated phone interactions, from the 2018 salon booking demo to tools like Hold for Me and Direct My Call. What distinguishes Call for Me is its ability to share user-approved personal information, enabling tasks like rescheduling appointments or placing holds that require identifying details.
The live transcript and takeover capability address a limitation of last year's business-calling tool, which lacked user intervention options. Google is deliberately restricting the preview to paid subscribers on Pixel 11 devices, acknowledging that real-world conversations remain challenging for AI systems.
This feature could reshape how people interact with businesses, potentially reducing time spent on hold and navigating phone menus. Small businesses may face new challenges verifying callers' identities or handling AI-driven conversations. Users may become more comfortable delegating personal tasks, but privacy concerns could arise around what information is shared and how it's stored.
