H&M and Magtech Partner to Scale Hydroponic Cotton Production
H&M Group's Circular Innovation Lab is collaborating with Spanish hydroponic firm Magtech to scale soil-free cotton growing. The method uses circulating water and AI to reduce water, pesticide, and land use compared to conventional cotton. The system can be set up in diverse locations, from rooftops to deserts, and aims to make hydroponic cotton a viable commercial alternative.
The collaboration pairs H&M’s innovation arm with Magtech’s hydroponic infrastructure, which uses circulating water and AI-assisted monitoring to grow cotton without soil. The system’s closed-loop design recaptures water and nutrients, while cameras help target pesticide use only where needed. Magtech notes that a single hectare holds roughly 30,600 plants across 52 long channels, making continuous human inspection impractical—hence the reliance on automated oversight.
A five-tonne trial batch has already passed quality checks, signaling progress beyond lab experiments. The approach is designed to be flexible, with potential sites ranging from rooftops to arid regions, and existing farm workers could be retrained for hydroponic operations. The companies emphasize this is a complementary method, not a full replacement for conventional cotton farming.
If scaled successfully, hydroponic cotton could ease pressure on water-scarce regions and reduce agricultural runoff, potentially benefiting communities near textile hubs. However, its viability depends on energy costs, infrastructure investment, and market acceptance. Conventional cotton farmers may face gradual shifts in demand, though the technology’s adaptability could create new local supply chains. Consumers might eventually see price or sustainability differences, but widespread impact remains uncertain until independent validation and commercial adoption prove the method’s long-term feasibility.
