Croatia clears extradition of Ukrainian suspect in Nord Stream pipeline sabotage
A Croatian court has approved the extradition of a Ukrainian man wanted by Germany for the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions. The suspect, identified as Vladimir Z., was arrested in August while working on a film project. His lawyer says the ruling will be appealed, so the extradition is not yet final.
The September 18 ruling moves the case forward, though the appeal means Vladimir Z. remains in Croatia for now. He was detained in Pula while reportedly working on a film about the attack. German authorities describe him as a trained diver who allegedly helped plant explosives on the pipelines near Bornholm.
A second suspect, Serhii K., was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany. His trial at the Hamburg Higher Regional Court begins October 14 and may continue through February 2027. German prosecutors believe a Ukrainian state agency ordered the sabotage to deprive Russia of energy revenues during its invasion.
The case could strain relations between Germany and Ukraine, as Berlin has been a major supporter of Kyiv. If the extradition proceeds and the trial reveals state involvement, it may complicate public support for Ukraine in Germany and across Europe. The outcome could also affect how European nations view infrastructure security and intelligence operations during wartime, potentially influencing policy debates about aid and diplomatic engagement.
