Vodafone and Ericsson test network-based AI call features

Vodafone and Ericsson have trialed AI-powered voice services that provide real-time noise cancellation and language translation directly within the mobile network. These features work without requiring special apps or new hardware, as they are integrated into the network infrastructure. The trial is part of their joint Core Network of the Future program.
The trial integrates Vodafone's application server and AI engines with Ericsson's IMS platform, using APIs to bridge telecom and AI systems. This architecture lets the network apply AI intelligence to voice calls during processing. The two demonstrated services are real-time noise cancellation for loud environments and live language translation between speakers of different languages.
The work stems from the Core Network of the Future program, a joint initiative exploring how AI can be embedded into network infrastructure. By delivering these features from within the network rather than through device apps, Vodafone could offer them to any customer on any handset by default, creating a scalable path for introducing new capabilities to both consumer and enterprise markets.
This development could significantly affect how people communicate across language barriers and noisy environments. If network-native AI services become widely available, users may no longer need specialized apps or new devices to access translation and call clarity features. This could benefit international business communications, customer service interactions, and everyday personal calls. However, widespread adoption may depend on network coverage, data privacy considerations, and whether operators can maintain consistent quality across different regions and network conditions.
