Shannon Airport Surpasses One Million Summer Passengers, Up 11.5% Year-on-Year
Shannon Airport handled over one million passengers from May to August, an 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The growth was driven by five new routes added in 2026, including Warsaw, Madrid, Rome, Poznań, and Frankfurt, and strong demand on transatlantic and European services. Airport Director Niall Kearns credited the expansion and increased frequencies for the record summer traffic.
The summer tally builds on a strong opening half of the year, when Shannon recorded a 12% rise in passenger numbers. The airport now operates 40 routes, including five daily transatlantic departures at peak season. European sun destinations such as Barcelona, Faro, Málaga, and Alicante proved popular, while London, Manchester, New York, Boston, and Chicago maintained vital links to the UK and US.
Shannon was named Ireland's fastest-growing major airport for three consecutive months during the summer by the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation. Director Niall Kearns emphasised the inbound benefits, noting thousands of overseas visitors came to experience the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland's golf courses, alongside sports fans travelling to events in both Ireland and the United States. The airport plans continued terminal investment through the winter months.
The passenger milestone could benefit the wider western Ireland economy, as improved connectivity may support tourism businesses along the Wild Atlantic Way and the hospitality sector. Local communities may see seasonal employment gains, while travellers gain greater choice and potentially more competitive fares. However, sustained growth may also place pressure on airport infrastructure and regional transport links, requiring careful planning to preserve the smooth, hassle-free experience passengers have come to expect from Shannon.
